I went into this anime hoping to laugh...and I laughed, however not in the route or for the reasons I was anticipating. This show is not as witty as I would have loved. Rather it's imbecilic amusing, making you chuckle at the express hogwash that is hurled out.

The Opening:

Kaho Nikaidou is a shielded rich young lady who has abandoned her life of extravagance behind to go to class in the city and have genuine encounters. She opens the show with a monolog about this and the way that she's never had anybody be irate with her.

A rest commendable opening certainly, however whatever. It will be over soon. She practically gets hit by a truck, however is spared by the nice looking man-youngster and then they understand they live in a similar boardinghouse. Also, begin dating...

The Characters:

Kaho begins as a befuddling character. She needs to take control of her life. She understands she can't really date a fifth grader- - and after that she dates the fifth grader.

Is this her taking control of her life? You get no convincing explanation behind why she consents to it aside from, yah know, satire.

Kanade Takahashi is on the double a dick joke making fifth grade kid and a truly sincere person attempting to be the great kid his mom needed him to be. His funniness all originates from the way that he resembles a man, yet acts like a tyke.

The supporting cast comprises of Kanade's primary school companions (two of which are additionally man-kids), alternate visitors in the house- - all of which are odd, and the proprietor Mr. Takahashi- - Kanade's father, who can't get some answers concerning his youngster dating an adolescent young lady.

The Potential for the Series:

I love the concept of this parody poking fun at the ridiculous romance tropes such as:

A. "I'll love him no matter what"
B. "He's so handsome = instant love"
C. "I should try to make this work, even though it absolutely cannot possibly work (and is illegal)"

(Now don't get me wrong, I love romance anime.  But it's healthy to be able to laugh at yourself.)

Honestly, I almost bailed on this show, but something that happens in episode 5 convinced me to keep going.

If this show can continue to play on the parodying romance themes in the coming episodes I think I'll end up enjoying it.  However, if it veers too far off into slice of life territory with random episodes that don't progress the plot, I think I will get bored.

These characters are not strong enough for that.  They're caricatures only, and their dick jokes easily get old.

I have no preference for this relationship to work or crumble--whichever tells a better story is fine with me.

Should You Watch Hatsukoi Monster?

Maybe.  If you are in the mood for something silly and a little bit dumb, try this one out.

It's too early to tell, but this show might know exactly what it is doing.
